We arrived dockside in Greenport, NY on Wednesday night. The two young dolphins above played with us for several hours on the second day of our voyage from St. Augustine, while other, older members of the pod watched from a little bit farther away. They would leave from time to time, and then come back with more friends. The most amazing part was the way they seemed truly curious about us. They would jump into the air and also swim on their sides in order to get a better look at us, and make eye contact. As they were leaving, three of the dolphins slapped the water with their tails in a farewell gesture. These are truly intelligent creatures.

The Voyage Ahead

After setting sail at some point today, we will sail steadily north, trying to follow the gulf stream winds up the coast. We will be about 50 miles from shore most of the time, and do not plan on stopping until Greenport, NY. Between the four of us on board, 2 must be awake at all times while under-way, so we will be taking shifts sailing the boat, which means I will have no choice but to learn a lot from this salty old sailors I’m with. The voyage should take anywhere from 6 – 10 days, at a cruising speed of about 6 knots.

Windlass

A windlass is that large winch you see on pirate boats with lots of guys walking around it to haul the anchor up. Momentum is equipped with a very large anchor, but no windlass — so guess what my new nickname is.

But before we (I) haul anchor, there is still more work to do, so off I go…
